Formula 1 2025 - Turnip or Triumph

2025 was a mixed year for F1. The drivers title was close, the constructors was not. There was some racing, even between the title contenders, but most races weren't close. There were some excellent results (podiums for Hulkenberg, Sainz, Antonelli and Hadjar) and some appalling ones (Ferrari, repeatedly Ferrari).

In my 2025 F1 round up, I thought I'd highlight three triumphs and three utter disasters from the year.

I will begin with the triumphs.

laurel_wreath_156019_1280

Max Verstappen - His driving this season will gain him more kudos than the driving in at least two of his World Title winning seasons.

Whoever designed that McLaren - Zak Brown has been curiously reluctant to mention Rob Marshall and Neil Houldey when talking about the car so I felt they deserved some praise now that I've found their names. The car won the Constructors title with 6 races (and 3 sprint races) to go. That's good work. And they did it without any flagrant, 'all-our-competitors-have-complained', engineering widgets.

Isack Hadjar - After a deeply unpromising start at the Australian Grand Prix (Did Not Start due to accident on formation lap), he ended up being second best of the rookies, despite being in Red Bull Scuderia B. Red Bull main had better not mess him up next year.

I am also going to give a bonus triumph here, please imagine a laurel wreath with a little heart on it, to Anthony Hamilton for supporting Hadjar when his own team didn't. While maybe basic human decency should be the minimum expected, in a world sadly short of it sometimes, it should be celebrated.

Now to the turnips - the actively bad things about this season:

food-1298729-1280

That Ferrari: I do actually like the noble turnip as a vegetable but I have no better way of describing that car. It is appalling. It is beneath Ferrari as a team and has broken the spirit of two drivers who deserve better.

Helmut Marko: For providing zero meaningful support for drivers for either team whose surname was not Verstappen. Your comments, particularly about Hadjar, were unhelpful.

Alpine in general: The car was horrid, but that isn't why they're here. Gasly mostly learnt to manage the car by the end of the season. Colapinto didn't.

Given that poor Jack Doohan got replaced after 6 races for getting nowhere with the car, I remain confused why Colapinto didn't, unless it was the money from his sponsors and the patronage of Flavio Briatore.

Briatore himself earns the poison turnip - dear F1, I love you. I love you because of your engineers who have never found a rule they didn't try to find a loophole in, your drivers and your unceasing nonsense. Why have you let Briatore back in? He doesn't deserve it.

We only had 4 people turn out for volleyball so we only played an hour and it was not very vigorous and then I swam laps for about 20 minutes. There is a problem with the pool - both the water and the air are a few degrees cooler than they should be. And it's the weekend. Assuming no one gets to it, it should be icicles by Monday. I told the front desk but the guy on duty is famous for not doing shit so...

The big headline news is that this morning there was no blood in Biggie's pee!!! It looked just like Julio's pee!!! Yep, I'm very excited to report the findings made in comparing my cats' urine. Turns out that one of the big pluses about tofu litter is the ability to see the color of pee easily. (Biggie and Julio use different litter box real estate. Biggie pees in the back of the box and Julio's partial to the front left side. This has been very helpful in tracking them.)

I finished up a very good book a few days ago (The Wrong Hands by Mark Billingham) and have had a really hard time latching onto a new one but I think I might have found the one... Playing Dead by Elizabeth Greenwood. It's non fiction about people and reasons and methods for faking your own death. I'm just at the beginning but the prolong is really interesting.

I'm at the beginning of Season 6 (of 10) of Shetland.

I am seriously considering a quick to Safeway. I want fried chicken and cake.

But right now, I need to go to Elbow Coffee.

(If you'd like to see previous years' master lists, 2011 is here, 2012 is here, 2013 is here, 2014 is here, 2015 is here, 2016 is here, 2017 is here, 2018 is here, 2019 is here, 2020 is here, 2021 is here, 2022 is here, 2023 is here, and 2024 is here.)

Happy 15th annual #ITPE!!!! Thank you for bearing with us despite Tumblr sabotaging us not just once, but twice.

Here’s some stats and highlights from this year’s #ITPE!

We had 73 participants this year, and you made 293 podfics for a total run time of 124 hours, 16 minutes, and 4 seconds–that’s over FIVE DAYS of audio!

We have 4 simulpods this year! Incredible things happened in The Queen’s Thief fandom with [tumblr.com profile] deepestbluesky podding a gift for [tumblr.com profile] likethetrench, who recorded the same story for her recipient [tumblr.com profile] feelingsandtaxes, who in turn podded that story for [tumblr.com profile] lady-sci. Classic #ITPE antics! [tumblr.com profile] flowerparrish and [tumblr.com profile] tinybluebirdcloak gifted each other the same story as a treat, with flowerparrish also receiving a podfic of a story ze gifted to another recipient. Finally, [tumblr.com profile] jeremyknox | [tumblr.com profile] kbirbpods and [tumblr.com profile] opalsong both podded the same story for their recipients.

By far our most prolific gifter this year was flowerparrish, who (on top of modding duties) not only made 4 gifts for zir recipient (including a nearly 11 hour podfic), but also picked up 2 pinch hits and made 57 treats. Not far behind was jeremyknox | kbirbpods who also picked up a pinch hit and made 15 main gifts for faer recipients and 16 treats! Opalsong had a relatively restrained year (for her), but still made 10 gifts (nearly 10 hours of audio) for her recipient! [tumblr.com profile] rhea314 was also a generous gifter this year, making 8 main gifts for her recipient and 10 treats! [tumblr.com profile] pezzax was another of our prolific gifters this year, making 22 treats! We also had generous treaters in [tumblr.com profile] blackestglass, [tumblr.com profile] wanderingjedihistorian, [tumblr.com profile] chaoskiro, [tumblr.com profile] j03-05, and [tumblr.com profile] wilfriede! Honorable mentions to [tumblr.com profile] popcornfairy28 and [tumblr.com profile] reena-jenkins for the 3 and 5.5 hour (respectively) podfics they made for their recipients, and to [tumblr.com profile] betrayedbycinnamon for treating despite not being signed up to the exchange!

Finally, we'd like to extend some thank you’s to:

-Data mod [archiveofourown.org profile] flowersforgraves for converting all the sign up data to airtable which makes matching so much easier.
-[archiveofourown.org profile] Asymptotical and [archiveofourown.org profile] Dragonflies_and_Katydids for creating the coding we used to generate distribution day templates.
-Our pinch hitters [tumblr.com profile] alliaskisthepossibilityoflove, [tumblr.com profile] flowerparrish and [tumblr.com profile] jeremyknox | [tumblr.com profile] kbirbpods
-And as always, [twitter.com profile] exmanhater for ITPE’s permanent hosting

Now let’s get on to what you’re really here for…..the masterlist!! Here’s the masterlist spreadsheet for this year’s exchange!

Happy listening!!!

This came via [personal profile] calimac: The 14 children's classics every adult should read

Oh yeah?

I read Ballet Shoes but as I recall, the first Streatfeild that actually crossed my reading eyes was Party Frock, okay, not so iconic a work.

I have to confess that I was recommended The Hobbit in my first year at uni in that unprepossessing circumstance of 'bloke I was not terribly impressed with' pressing it upon me.

I was well past childhood when Watership Down became a lapine phenomenon, but have read it.

As far as I can recall, I read Treasure Island when I was 7 or 8 and have never returned to it, perhaps I should.

Have no memory of The Enchanted Wood as such, but am pretty sure Miss S in primary school read us The Magic Faraway Tree one afternoon.

My first contact with Anne of Green Gables was retold in pictures in either Girl or Princess but we subsequently acquired copies of this and ?one or two of the sequels, or were these in the school library?

Little Women: now that one I did read at a very early age.

Ditto the Alice books.

My Family and Other Animals was one of offerings of my parents' book club - how has it become a children's classic?

The Secret Garden and The Wind in the Willows (also the Pooh books which are shamefully missing from this list) were Christmastime special offers from aforementioned book club.

I have never read The Little Prince, though I've osmosed a certain amount about it.

I don't think I read The Railway Children until I was of maturer years: my first Nesbit was The House of Arden, borrowed from Our Friends Along the Street, and I think maybe The Treasure Seekers and The Wouldbegoods on primary school library shelf?

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was a Christmas present (Penguin edition) when I was 10 or 11, and I went on to read the rest via the good offices of the local public library.

These all seem a bit somehow obvious? Without disputing their classic status, it's still a somewhat banal line-up.

Y'all I published 100,000 words this year!!! It's really hard to believe it. I only started writing fics in March and posted my first one at the end of April. This year has been absolutely shitty in a bunch of different ways, but I'm grateful that I'm writing again and for all the people in fandom and beyond that I've connected with. Hopefully 2026 will bring an end to some of the terrible crap happening in the world right now but if not at least there's still communities like this one.

I still have unrevealed work for the Sense8 Holiday Exchange that I can't talk about quite yet, but for the fic that officially put me over the 100,000 word mark, may I present Nai-robbery.

Teen, 3504 words
This was submitted for [community profile] smallfandomfest. The prompt was: Wolfgang & Capheus - Bonding over having loyal (and loud) childhood besties

I hope to eventually write OT3 (Rajalagang) + Felix visiting everyone in the cluster, and I'm now one step closer with Capheus. One of the things I think we really missed out on with the cancellation was seeing more moments between members of the cluster that didn't have a lot of interactions. Wolfgang is one of the worst for that, which is definitely due in part to his character since he basically didn't talk to anyone but Kala until episode 10!!! But I think there was seriously a missed opportunity for him and Capheus to bond over the two of them having basically the same BFF. Felix and Jela would get on like a house on fire and god help anyone's peace and quiet within a hundred feet of them. And since we never got the background story for how Capheus and Jela met, here's a bit of that too.

I went back to the pool this morning, after having been away for over a week due to being unwell, and then the sports centre's Christmas closure. It was almost completely empty when I started my laps, and had filled up massively by the end; this is a strange time of year, when I can never judge how other people are planning to fill their time.

Another December talking meme prompt and response )

Other than the very low-effort books I mentioned in my previous post, I've read very little, although I am working my way through The Story of A New Name, the second book in Elena Ferrante's acclaimed Neapolitan quartet, and finding it as excellent as the first. This book covers our narrator's late teens and early adulthood, with that same mix of tightly observed specificity (the impoverished residents of a single block of apartments in 1960s Naples) and more universally relatable observations on the excruciating experiences of being a young woman.

I also read Motherland (Julia Ioffe), a memoir-history in the mode of Jung Chang's Wild Swans which follows the author's family through four generations of the twentieth century in what are now Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. Being Jewish people in that part of the world during the Holocaust, World War II, and the Soviet Union's existence and collapse was obviously not easy, and Ioffe's various ancestors navigated these treacherous waters with ingenuity, resilience, and persistence. As well as being a family history, Ioffe attempts in the book to write a social history of 'Russian' women (inverted commas very much needed, because she has a frustrating habit of treating 'Russian' as synonymous with 'other regions of the Russian empire,' 'Soviet', and so on), from the birth of the Soviet Union to current times. Here, although she highlights some extraordinary people and episodes in history, I feel the book is weaker, because (other than the women of her own family), she focuses for the most part on elites — wives of Soviet leaders, Stalin's daughter, wives and mistresses of Putin and his oligarchs, Yulia Navalnaya, and so on — and although her thesis is that such women offer a sort of mirror into the changing society, I can't help but feel that they're not exactly representative.

And that's it in terms of reading for now. I picked up a couple of silly sounding romantasy ebooks, I've still got two Rosemary Sutcliff books out from the library, and Matthias returned from today's grocery shopping with an unexpected book gift for me, but I'm not sure how many of these I'll make it through before the year's end. In any case, my focus is still the Yuletide collection at the moment.

So season one is over, and we have to wait a year and a bit for season 2, because the script isn't written yet (whereas a year ago Jacob Tierney had the S1 script completed). I've already watched the existing eps at least twice, some three times, and have watched popular scenes many more times than that, in gifs.

Watching episode six was such a trip as by then I was fully immersed in the fandom. It dropped here at 7pm each time, and I made myself wait until after 9pm when it was dark before watching, as I like to be cocooned in a lighted bubble with the show. Then after the ep was finished I went to tumblr for the gifs, reactions, and meta, and today I rewatched it, picking up several small things others had noticed and blogged about. I'll rewatch the show again off and on - it's a comfort watch for me now - and while we wait for season 2 there'll be art, and fanfic.

Belatedly! And Happy Thursday for those who don't celebrate! It was a quiet, lovely day for [personal profile] cypher and me. We broke open the Heroes' Feast DnD cookbook. Will made Amphail Braised Beef and some delicious saffron bread called St. Lucia Buns (they got the recipe from a Scandinavian friend on tumblr). For sides I made Otik's Skillet-Fried Spiced Potatoes, Quith-Pa (an Elven recipe containing apricots and almonds; the original called for coconut but Will's allergic so I subbed in the almonds), and Wood Elf Forest Salad.

We exchanged gifts, which can be summed up as Warhammer + art supplies (for me) and Warhammer + video games (for Will). As always, I wish I could have done more, but they assured me I did enough. I just want to get them all the nice things. ;3;

I finished my assignment for [community profile] eatdrinkmakemerry and for [tumblr.com profile] secretsanguinala and am now working on a gift and a pinch hit for the latter. I don't know what came over me — possibly having a steady job (good, security!) + the state of the world (extremely bad) is combining in a way that's making my brain look for fun productivity — but I'm having a ton of fun working on fandom stuff. :D It probably also helps that I'm working on mostly crack ships and AUs. Also, wrt Secret Sanguinala, it's my fandom's holiday exchange! I want it to be successful and full! Reveals were late Christmas Eve so this last gift is gonna be a little late, but that's okay.

(I drew ABO porn for the first time! what the heck!)

I both love and hate that Steam has a yearly replay similar to Spotify's Wrapped. I love it because, I mean, I'm very sentimental and I love looking back on the year! But I hate it because it's such a magnifying glass on how bad I am at staying on task in games, lmao. Oh well. I'm hoping 2026 is a kinder year in all ways and I'll be able to focus better on hobby things.

........I usually do a little look back on the year but frankly, 2025 SUCKED and I don't want to. It was just a shitty, disheartening, scary year and I understand that there is a lot of privilege to being able to be like, nope, not gonna focus on all that scary stuff, but damn it! I'm tired of focusing on the scary stuff! It's ALL bad! Even news about video games is bad (Larian employees making fun of the gender stuff in BG3, Larian using AI for the character design in Divinity, etc) and it's just. All bad. So I'm looking forward to the future and the things I can control.

Speaking of which, I bought a fancy hardback planner for this year!

The gold is shiny and I'm using different colored pens to help try and keep me on track. As someone notorious for NOT staying on track on goals....I hope I can stick with this, lmao.

Catching up on Christmas

Christmas went very well. I got up to find Middle Brother already awake and dressed. I gave him his stocking. Then we had breakfast and I had coffee.

I put Christmas music on and we listened to that until 3:00 when I took him out by bus to McDonalds for a small lunch. I had a fillet-o-fish, yes I actually like those.

Then we went back to my place and listened to more Christmas music til somewhat after 4:30 when the Kid texted and said we should be calling the Uber at 5:30. So at 5:15 I started getting ready, moving the huge bags of presents and the two big boxes, and the bag of food to the door, then out of the apartment, then to the front door, then down to the sidewalk. In stages.

We got to the Kid's apartment and her boyfriend helped us upstairs. [personal profile] mashfanficchick arrived shortly after, and we got started with the appetizers and then presents. It was a lot of fun, everyone liked what they got.

Then we had dinner. It was ham, potatoes, and spinach with mushrooms. All delicious. Then after that we had cookies and peppermint bark for dessert.

We listened to the Kid's Christmas music and talked til almost 12:00 which was starting to get Middle Brother upset, so finally we all left. We shared a Lyft with [personal profile] mashfanficchick.

Got home and got things set up for bed as fast as possible which is why I didn't post more than I did. Middle Brother went to bed, and I did as fast as I could too.

Woke up this morning at a bit before 10:00. Middle Brother was as usual up and dressed. I put on Christmas music and made us breakfast, and me coffee. Then I deflated and folded up the air mattress, and then showered and dressed.

I asked Middle Brother what he wanted to do and he wanted to go back to his group home, so I got us ready and we took the bus to Jamaica and the LIRR to Hicksville where the person from his group home picked him up. I turned around and managed to make a city-bound train almost immediately so that was good.

I found out that my meeting tonight was cancelled, and there's a good chance the meeting tomorrow will be too, because of the snow storm we have coming, so I arranged with [personal profile] mashfanficchick to stay overnight at zer place so we could watch Heated Rivalry. The last episode til the new season comes out next year.

So when I got home I collected my mail, two new Christmas cards! and packed for a night away. Fed the pets, and left. The snow was just starting. It's still coming down.

Watched Heated Rivalry, and had shrimp for dinner. The final episode is so lovely.

Then I Teamed the FWiB, but his coughing was so bad we had to cut it short.

We vacuum-packed the gluten free bagels that the Kid backed for [personal profile] mashfanficchick's present, and now we're getting ready for bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Middle Brother had a good time.

3. The Kid.

4. Riding out the snow with a friend.

5. Christmas cards.

6. Christmas with family.

Sourcing German text in Princess Tutu

German text in a torn book, from episode 17 of Princess Tutu

This is a screenshot of Episode 17 (Timestamp 12:35 out of 20:41) of the cult classic metafictional fairy-tale anime Princess Tutu (2002).

Long ago, I saw a post that identified the exact source of the text in this image. The source, according to the post, was a German book or literary journal of some sort, discussing a landmark piece of German metafiction aimed at children. That novel, Die unendliche Geschichte (1972) by Michael Ende, was published in English-speaking countries as The Neverending Story. Does that name ring a bell? According to a survey from 2006, the original novel was most popular and successful in Germany and Japan; most Americans, meanwhile, were more familiar with the 1984 film adaptation.

The original post, unfortunately, was witnessed so long ago that I do not even remember if it was late 2000's or early 2010's, late-Livejournal or early-Tumblr. I have tried searching both sites. I have never been able to find the original post. There is a post about German in Princess Tutu on the old LJ community; it does not cover this episode.

While lamenting my struggle with [personal profile] stepnix, he hunted down a lead: a German-language PDF of "books you need to know."

Let's go down to page 27!

Er, not what the PDF says is page 27. What the PDF says is page 29. We can actually identify some exact lines from the screenshot in this page!

  • und Fantasie. In Die unendliche
  • Poesie als Medien der Selbst- und
  • als wirksame Möglichkeit, Realität zu
  • wechselseitigen Einflusses von Vorstellung-
  • allem an der altersgerechten
  • Ziele orientierten Jugendliteratur

Now, here's the issue: this PDF, according to the information on the sixth page of the PDF, appears to be a digitized copy of a booklet (or excerpt of a larger book?) published by Duden in 2011. Princess Tutu, meanwhile, aired on Japanese television in 2002.

I sincerely doubt Ikuko Itoh, Junichi Sato, or anyone else who was working on the anime are secret time travelers. Which means that there must be an older source for this writeup on Die unendliche Geschichte.

In the meantime, here's a Google Translate version of the quoted passage:

The central theme of the young adult novel, which has become a cult classic for adults, is the relationship between reality and fantasy. In The Neverending Story, art and poetry assert themselves as media for self-discovery and understanding the world, and fantasy proves to be an effective way to change reality. The exploration of the reciprocal influence of worlds of imagination and ideas opened up new perspectives for young adult literature, which until then had primarily focused on adapting social themes and educational goals to suit the age group.

Finally, though! Now when I say "there's a link between this anime and The Neverending Story", I have something to point to! Very useful for if anyone wants to write meta about that connection. ^_^

Wrapping up this year's prompts! This isn't entirely the last of them, but I think after this one, I'm done with the ones that sparked story ideas, so I'll be declaring prompt amnesty and starting over fresh in the new year.

The prompt, which is somewhat spoilery for the fic [from an anon] Biggles prompt- on a case they run into/are made to work with someone who was nasty to Biggles in his school-days, who tries to renew such treatment, and EvS, also involved with whatever they're investigating, finds himself possessed of both an unexpected protective urge and in the rare position to offer his own "you're better than the people you're working for" speech

Gen, late in canon, Erich + team with perhaps slight EvS/Biggles undertones, 1800 wds
